Can I find any Asperger’s Syndrome rehabilitation assistance online?
Confused about life asked:
I have Asperger’s Syndrome, and am currently having extensive issues in my life. In the Fall 2006 semester, I dropped out of the engineering program because I was unable to handle the pressure of a required class designed to simulate the work environment. I found that while I had the classes on paper, I did not have any skills in reality, and even though I graduated with a biology degree, I possess few practical skills from that discipline.
I do realize that I will have to work someday in order to get anywhere in life. I have to do something besides sit in my parent’s house and do nothing besides sit on the computer. I would like to ask where I can receive low-cost rehabilitation for Asperger’s Syndrome online or around the STL area that would be effective in my situation. Thank you very much.
When I had the opportunity to go to college, my parents would not allow me to select a college that suited me or let me make some of my own choices. Another reason I had to drop out was because my dad became very sick and my doctor wanted me to spend time with him so that he would feel better. As a result, I am now in a position where I am not sure if I can afford to return to college, because my parents were helping me, and now they refuse because they are displeased with me. I was recently bitten by a spider, which has caused me to now require surgery. I was obviously not performing at my best because of the pain, and my family was so angry at me, accusing me of being happy at the family’s misfortunes on some occasions and said that “every good thing you have going for you will be taken away so quickly” just because I was 30 seconds late in getting in the car to go the doctor. My situation is improving because I now know I need to shape their perceptions of me. Thanks!

I’m not sure, but if you would like to talk to somebody, I could. I have High Functioning Autism, and I’m going through the same things, only in high school.
Don’t be afraid to get help from people. I know because you’re smart enough to get into university (or collage, you didn’t say) and go into Engineering and Biology. In grade 8 I had no help whatsoever, and I found it very hard to accept the help I needed this year.
Maybe take a year of and do things such as volunteering or other things that will increase your practical skills.
People know so much more about Autism now, that it’s easier for people to understand you then people with lesser known disabilities.
I know I’m only in garde nine, but I’m just offering my advice if you want it.
Sorry dude, but there is no such thing as “Asperger’s rehab”. You can learn some coping skills though, but social stuff etc is never going to be easy or even ‘natural’ to you. I don’t know about any particular place online that could help you, but there are plenty of mailing lists for Aspies where you might be able to get some advice and ideas. But basically you’ll just have to learn to live with your limitations.
I read your other two questions btw and I understand your problem, but I’m not sure what the solution is. I dropped out of university too, I was double majoring in Electrical Engineering and Neuroscience (I wanted to work on neuroprosthetics). For now I’m just going to be a sahm (I’m due Sept. 1st), and yeah, I agree that the pay ain’t so great when compared to the $55k average starting salary I was expecting.
At UTD (the uni I was attending) they’ve got a senior design project as well, but I don’t think they’re quite as focused on suit and tie kinda stuff, but I’m not sure, I didn’t make it that far. If I were you I’d go and talk to the school and the professors, explain that you’ve got autism and ask for extra help. Still, you gotta understand that in the industry you *are* going to be paid better if you possess all the right soft skills. So basically it’s up to you to decide what’s more important to you… money or just a relaxed lifestyle that suits your personality better. Also, what’s wrong with attending a school in a different region of the country? Your school sounds like it sucks more than average. My husband btw wanted to do AI/neural network kinda stuff so he majored in Cognitive Science, and that was much more suitable than CompSci or EE… both CS and EE undergraduate stuff focus too much on working together… probably because most people majoring in those disciplines suck at those skills. Also, graduate school might be nicer…
Good luck.
